For background, see the original Bitcoin white paper and the Bitcoin FAQ.

What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin is an open-source system for moving digital value without a central payment operator. Its network records ownership through transactions rather than through a bank’s customer ledger. BTC is the asset transferred on that network.

Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin’s design in 2008, and the network began operating in 2009. Today, independent participants run software that checks the same rules. There is no Bitcoin company that can reset a personal wallet or promise a return to coin holders.

People use Bitcoin for payments, transfers, trading, and long-term holdings. Some describe it as digital gold because of its limited supply. However, that comparison does not make its price stable or guarantee that it will preserve purchasing power.

How does Bitcoin work?

1. Wallets use keys to authorize spending

A Bitcoin wallet manages the keys needed to spend coins. The coins themselves are represented in the blockchain’s records, not stored as files inside the wallet. A receiving address tells someone where to send a payment. A private key provides the authority to spend the relevant funds.

When you send BTC, the wallet creates a transaction and signs it. Other participants can check the signature without learning the private key. This is the basic process described in Bitcoin’s explanation of how transactions work.

2. Transactions spend earlier outputs

Bitcoin uses unspent transaction outputs, usually called UTXOs. Think of them as separate pieces of spendable value. A wallet can combine several pieces to make a payment and return the remainder to a change address it controls.

For example, spending a 0.01 BTC output to send 0.004 BTC does not automatically give the recipient the whole output. The wallet can create one output for the recipient and another for change, with the difference covering the network fee. See the Bitcoin developer guide to transactions.

3. Miners propose blocks and nodes verify them

Miners collect transactions and compete to produce a valid block using specialized computing hardware. This process is called Proof of Work. A successful miner can receive the block subsidy plus the fees from included transactions.

Full nodes independently check that a block follows Bitcoin’s rules. They reject invalid transactions and invalid coin creation. Thus, mining power does not give a miner permission to take coins from any wallet. The mining documentation explains the process in more detail.

4. Confirmations strengthen settlement

A transaction gets its first confirmation when a valid block includes it. Later blocks add more confirmations. Rewriting that history requires replacing the work securing it, which becomes harder as more blocks follow.

Bitcoin targets an average block interval of roughly 10 minutes. Actual waiting times vary, and a transaction with a low fee may wait much longer. An exchange can also require several confirmations before crediting a deposit. Blockchain confirmation and account crediting are separate steps. The blockchain developer guide explains validation and chain selection.

Bitcoin supply, mining rewards, and halving

Bitcoin’s issuance follows a schedule enforced by its consensus rules. The block subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. This slows the creation of new BTC and leads toward a total supply of about 21 million coins.

A halving reduces the subsidy, not the transaction fees that miners can collect. It also does not cut existing wallet balances in half. Most importantly, a lower issuance rate does not guarantee a higher market price. Demand, available liquidity, and market expectations still matter. Learn more from Bitcoin’s halving guide.

What are the advantages of Bitcoin?

Direct transfers: users can send value through a shared network without relying on a single central payment operator.

Verifiable records: anyone can inspect the public chain, while a full node can check transactions against the rules.

Predictable issuance: the current rules define how new coins enter circulation.

Divisibility: users can transfer fractions of a BTC instead of buying or sending a whole coin.

Self-custody: a person who controls the spending keys can hold BTC without leaving it with an exchange.

These benefits explain Bitcoin’s appeal, but each comes with trade-offs. Public records can expose transaction patterns. Self-custody requires careful key management. A fixed supply also does not remove market risk.

What are the disadvantages of Bitcoin?

Price changes can be large

BTC can rise or fall sharply, including over short periods. This makes budgeting difficult for someone who needs a stable amount of spending money. A successful transfer does not protect the purchasing power of the coins received.

On-chain capacity and fees vary

Block space is limited. When many people want transactions included, fees can rise and confirmation times can lengthen. A small payment may become expensive relative to its value. Therefore, check the current fee estimate before sending.

Payments require careful handling

Bitcoin does not provide a central chargeback service. If funds reach the wrong recipient, getting them back generally depends on that recipient’s cooperation. A payment to an address nobody can spend from may be lost. Read Bitcoin’s guidance for new users before transferring funds.

Mining has an energy cost

Proof of Work uses electricity and dedicated equipment. Its environmental impact depends partly on the power sources used and the location of mining activity. Estimates also change over time. The Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index provides research on this subject.

Bitcoin is not private by default

Addresses do not display a person’s name by default, but transactions are public. Once an address is linked to an identity, related activity may become easier to trace. Reusing addresses can further weaken privacy. See Bitcoin’s privacy guidance.

Does the Lightning Network solve every limitation?

The Lightning Network adds payment channels on top of Bitcoin. It can support fast payments without recording every individual transfer on the base blockchain. However, it introduces channel-liquidity, routing, and wallet-management considerations. Some services also hold funds for their users.

An on-chain Bitcoin address and a Lightning payment request are different. Use Lightning only when both the sending and receiving services explicitly support it. A BTC balance alone does not establish Lightning support on an exchange. The Lightning Labs payment-channel guide explains how channels work.

Key risks to understand before trading Bitcoin

Market risk and order execution

The price shown on a chart is not a promise that your entire order will execute at that price. Check the spread and the available orders. A large order can fill across several price levels, while a limit order may fill only partly or remain open.

Exchange custody and wallet security

Holding BTC on an exchange means relying on that service’s security, operations, and ability to process withdrawals. Self-custody removes that particular dependency, but creates a different responsibility: protecting keys and backups. Losing access to all valid backups can mean losing the coins permanently.

Use a unique password and the available account-security controls. For a personal wallet, keep recovery information offline and private. Never send it to someone claiming to provide support. See Bitcoin’s wallet-security guidance.

Scams, impersonation, and wrong-network transfers

Fake exchange pages, malicious wallet software, and promises of guaranteed returns can lead to theft. Verify the domain before signing in. Do not trust a message simply because it uses a familiar logo. Review common Bitcoin scams and confirm transfer details through the receiving service itself.

Native BTC is different from a wrapped Bitcoin token on another blockchain. Do not send a wrapped token to a native Bitcoin address unless the receiving service explicitly supports that asset and route. Check the asset, network, address, amount, and fee before each transfer.

Protocol and confirmation risk

Network security is strong, but it is not an absolute guarantee. Software faults, chain reorganizations, and attacks can affect transaction handling. For example, a dominant miner could attempt to reorganize recent transactions or censor payments, but cannot simply sign transactions using someone else’s private keys.

Quote-asset and regulatory risks

In BTC/USDT, USDT introduces its own issuer, reserve, redemption, and peg risks. Review Tether’s terms and risk disclosures as part of your research. In TRX/BTC, both assets can move against your local currency. A gain measured in BTC can still accompany a loss measured in dollars. When the payment service is available, select Bitcoin (BTC), choose your payment currency, and enter the amount. Next, provide a wallet address that supports native BTC. Check the quoted BTC amount, total charge, and fees before continuing. Then follow the payment provider’s card and identity checks. After approval, the provider sends BTC to the wallet address you entered. Card support and purchase limits depend on your location, bank, and the provider. Read the supported network, minimum amount, and confirmation requirements. Copy the current receiving address directly from that page.

In the sending wallet, select the same supported network and verify the address before confirming. Consider a small test transfer that meets the deposit minimum. Keep the transaction ID so you can check its progress. Do not reuse instructions from an old screenshot.

Withdraw BTC

Choose BTC in the balance section and select Withdraw, when available. Enter the address supplied by the receiving wallet or exchange. Check the network, withdrawal amount, minimum, and final fee. Complete the account’s required confirmation steps.

For current charges, consult Tokpie’s fees page and the withdrawal form. Network fees and an exchange’s withdrawal charge are different concepts. Avoid assuming a fixed fee or a guaranteed arrival time.

List your coin or token in a BTC pair on Tokpie

Crypto project founders can request a BTC trading pair for their coin or token on Tokpie. A YOUR COIN/BTC market lets users price the project’s asset in Bitcoin and trade it against a BTC balance. Tokpie can list native coins and tokens running on any blockchain, subject to the required integration.

This gives founders another quote-asset option alongside markets such as USDT. However, a BTC pair does not remove volatility. The project’s coin can move against BTC, while BTC itself moves against fiat currencies. Liquidity and spreads also depend on the actual order book.

Share your blockchain, coin or token details, and preferred BTC pair with the listing team. Then review integration requirements and market setup. Explore the Tokpie coin and token listing guide for the listing process and available project services.

Request a BTC pair for your project

Frequently asked questions about Bitcoin

Do I need to buy one whole Bitcoin?

No. Bitcoin is divisible into satoshis. You can trade a fraction of a BTC, subject to the exchange’s current minimum order size and precision.

Is Bitcoin the same as Wrapped Bitcoin?

No. BTC is native to the Bitcoin network. Wrapped versions are separate assets issued on other networks. They introduce additional arrangements and risks, so their deposit routes are not interchangeable.

Does Bitcoin pay staking rewards?

Bitcoin uses Proof of Work, not native Proof of Stake. Simply holding BTC does not earn a protocol staking yield. A service offering a return on BTC uses a separate arrangement with its own risks.

How long does a Bitcoin transfer take?

There is no fixed arrival time. The fee, demand for block space, block discovery, and the receiving service’s confirmation policy all affect the wait.

How do I get BTC from TRX on Tokpie?

Use the Sell side of TRX/BTC: you sell TRX and receive BTC when the trade executes. Buying in that same pair spends BTC to acquire TRX.

Can my project request a BTC trading pair?

Yes. Ask the Tokpie listing team about a BTC pair for your coin or token. Provide the asset and blockchain details so the team can confirm the integration and market requirements.

Explore Bitcoin markets on Tokpie

Review the fundamentals, understand the risks, and check the order book before you trade Bitcoin on Tokpie.
